Derek Douget is a Grammy award winning saxophonist who has been a professional on the New Orleansmusic scene for over 20 years. Douget was born and raised in Gonzales, Louisiana and moved to NewOrleans to attend the University of New Orleans where he earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies. In2010, Douget became The Music Education Coordinator for the Jazz and Heritage Foundation and where he oversees the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of music and is also an Adjunct professor at theUniversity of New Orleans. Derek has been a member of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet for over twenty yearsand has performed with: Nicholas Payton, Doctor John, Elvin Jones, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Wyclef Jean, Mulgrew Miller, and many others. 


In the spring of each of the past 10 years, Derek and his quintet of top New Orleans jazz musicians has visited the Santa Barbara area as guests of the Lobero Theater Foundation and given workshops and performances at all of the area's secondary schools and colleges. The performance at SOHO marks a collaboration between Derek and the UCSB Jazz Ensemble, and will feature some of UCSB's best jazz musicians including pianist Megan Etzel, trombonist Sriram Ramamurthy, trumpeter Lucian Mahan, and bassist Liam Ronarch, along with UCSB Jazz Ensembles director Jon Nathan on the drums.
